Energia Group Take on Detour and Challenger for a Team-Building Day in Belfast

Dynamic Events organised Detour at Crowne Plaza Belfast, followed by outdoor Challenger activities at Instonians RFC. The day was planned around Energia Group's goals of improving collaboration, communication and resilience, with lunch and an evening BBQ included.

What Energia Group Was Looking For

Energia Group got in touch with Dynamic Events about organising a team-building day in Northern Ireland.

They wanted to focus on three things: collaboration, communication and resilience. With an initial group size of up to 100 people, they also needed activities that would suit a mix of ages and abilities.

They were open to suggestions on activities, venues and catering, so we had room to put together a day around what they wanted to achieve.

What We Recommended

We suggested combining two of our programmes: Detour Change Management Training and Challenger.

Detour would get people thinking about how they make decisions, communicate and deal with change. Challenger would get them outdoors, working through a mix of physical and problem-solving tasks.

The final plan was for 66 attendees, starting at Crowne Plaza Belfast before moving to Instonians RFC for the afternoon.

Starting the Day with Detour at Crowne Plaza Belfast

Everyone arrived at Crowne Plaza Belfast from 09:45 for tea, coffee and pastries before Detour got underway at 10:30.

The Laganview meeting room was set up with 12 round tables, giving participants space to work in smaller groups.

Detour is a business simulation where teams have to make decisions, manage resources and respond when things don't go to plan.

It's not about sitting through presentations. Participants have to discuss their options, agree on decisions and adapt as the simulation develops.

This made it a good fit for Energia Group's focus on communication and resilience.

At 12:30, everyone stopped for a finger buffet lunch before making the short walk across to Instonians RFC.

An Afternoon of Challenger at Instonians RFC

At 14:00, it was time to head outdoors for Challenger.

The group took on a mix of activities across two zones on the grounds of Instonians RFC.

The On Track zone featured Puc, Wellies, Javelin, Egg & Spoon, Hula Hoop and Space Hoppers.

Over in the Off Track zone, teams tackled Gutter, Skis, Pong, Bricks, Alphablocks and Bat & Ball.

The activities ran until 16:00, rounding off the competitive part of the day.

BBQ and Drinks to Finish

After the Challenger activity, the group enjoyed a BBQ and drinks.
