As hard as it is to believe it has been a year since Covid 19 entered our world - this time last year most companies were shifting to a work from home model for what we thought would be short term.

The first few months were novel - the weather was good, no commute to work and we all had more time to spend with our families.

Fast forward 12 months and many feel the benefits of working from home are being cancelled out by the fatigue that comes with them. Some employees are still happy with the situation but for many, it is getting old. The novelty and initial excitement is gone.

Some of the reasons why remote workers are feeling work from home fatigue include:

  • Overworking
  • Poor habits
  • Juggling between home and work responsibilities
  • Kids being off school
  • Work station
  • Lack of socialising

Not to fear, here are our 5 tips to beat work from home fatigue:

1. Take A Break

Schedule breaks during your work day. Take time between meetings/calls to allow you re-energise before your next call. Step away from the desk, make a coffee, step out into the back garden for some fresh air, spend 5 minutes with the kids or just do whatever makes you happy.

It is also worth assessing whether a virtual meeting is necessary or would a phone call or email suffice?

2. Change Of Scenery

After months and months of working from home and staring at the same wall a change of scenery can help you feel refreshed. Changing your setup can give you that new fresh start feeling. Ideally, try move to a better lit area, preferably natural lighting as that will help you feel more awake and focused.

3. Switch Off

When you clock out for the evening make sure you step away from your desk - mentally and physically! We all know the feeling, your alarm goes off first thing in the morning and you check your emails.

It is important to have a dedicated workspace where all you do is work is critical to create boundaries between your work and personal lives.

4. Take A Day Off

It is vital to take a day off if you are suffering from fatigue. Take a day where you indulge in self-care, exercise, meditate, spend time with the family, - whatever helps you to relax and recharge. Just because you cannot currently travel does not mean you should abstain from taking annual leave days. Look after your body and your mind.

5. Reconnect

Without coworkers around to talk with, it can get lonely or quiet when working from home. Schedule calls with friends and family to make during your breaks.
