5 Best Indoor Team Building Activities for Winter

Winter in Ireland can make an outdoor team event a bit of a gamble.

That doesn't stop everyone. We still have groups who are perfectly happy to put on a coat and head out on a Digital Treasure Hunt. But most of the winter enquiries we see move indoors, and weather certainty is only one reason.

Often, the hotel is already booked. The team might be there for a meeting or conference, with team building planned for later in the day. In many cases they're already sitting around tables in the same room where the activity will take place.

So what do you do with them?

These five indoor team building activities give you five quite different answers.

1. Give them a murder to solve

A school reunion has taken a turn. Lawyer Laura Norder has been murdered, and the room is now full of detectives.

In Manor House Murder, teams investigate the crime using clues, evidence, witness statements and puzzles before making their final accusation. It runs for two hours and is an indoor activity for groups of 10 to 300.

The story is what separates it from a straightforward collection of team challenges. Everything points back to the same question: who did it?

That gives people plenty to argue about around the table. One person spots something in a witness statement, somebody else has a theory about a suspect, and eventually the team has to decide whose version of events they believe.

If murder mysteries are already popular with your group, this is an easy one to put on the shortlist.

2. Build something that leaves the room

SolarBuddy: Hour of Power changes the direction completely.

Participants assemble solar-powered lights for communities living in energy poverty and write personal letters to the children receiving them. The activity usually runs for 60 to 90 minutes.

Companies also receive post-event impact data covering areas such as the number of devices assembled, lives impacted, CO₂ emissions reduced and study hours enabled.

That makes SolarBuddy particularly relevant when CSR or ESG is already part of the brief.

It can also slot into a much bigger company event. Dynamic Events has previously delivered SolarBuddy for 750 people at a January sales kick-off in the Convention Centre Dublin, where the activity followed the keynote sessions.

3. Start with a lot of canvases. Finish with one picture.

There is always a moment during Big Picture when what everyone has been working on finally makes sense.

Participants paint individual sections of a larger artwork. Those separate canvases are then assembled to reveal the complete picture.

That final reveal is a big part of why we'd include it on this list.

It's also a useful change of pace if your team has spent the morning looking at slides, listening to presentations or discussing next year's plans. Instead of moving into another screen-based session, you've suddenly got paint and canvases on the tables.

And no, the office's best artist doesn't need to quietly take charge.

The point is the finished piece and seeing how all those separate sections fit together.

4. Turn the meeting room into an escape challenge

If the team is already in a hotel or conference venue, you don't necessarily need to put everyone on a bus to visit an escape room.

The premise is an art heist. Your team has been framed and has to clear its name by searching for clues, solving puzzles and cracking codes before time runs out. Teams compete against each other, with a live leaderboard tracking their progress. The full event runs for around 90 minutes.

This is where an indoor activity can make a company day easier to plan.

We regularly hear from clients who already have a hotel, office or conference room booked. In many cases the team building is simply another part of the agenda. Most of our indoor activities work well with the round-table layouts groups are already using, and we'll liaise with the client and venue around what's needed.

So the morning can be presentations and meetings. The afternoon can involve proving you didn't steal a piece of art.

5. Put a locked safe in front of them

There is something wonderfully uncomplicated about the objective in Code Breaker.

There's a safe.

Your team can't open it.

Get to work.

Teams race through locked boxes, clues, props and codes as they move closer to the final solution. It's a one-hour indoor activity for 10 to 100 people and can be delivered at an office, hotel or conference venue.

At first glance, that might sound quite similar to The Escape. The distinction is useful when you're choosing between them.

The Escape wraps its puzzles inside the art-heist story and runs for around 90 minutes. Code Breaker is a more compact one-hour challenge built around progressing through the puzzles and eventually opening the safe.

If you've only got an hour between the business part of the day and whatever comes next, that difference matters.

Actually, you don't have to stay indoors

We wouldn't tell a client that an event has to be indoors simply because it's happening in November, December or January.

Some of our winter groups still choose outdoor activities, particularly Digital Treasure Hunts. Teams head out around their location using GPS-enabled devices, completing questions, challenges and photo or video tasks as they go.

You just need to be comfortable with the fact that you're organising an outdoor event in an Irish winter.

For plenty of organisers, staying indoors is the simpler choice. The venue may already be booked, the activity might follow a meeting or conference, or the group may simply prefer not to spend the afternoon checking the rain radar.
