How Operation Windfall Works

Team Get Their Brief
You start in small teams with one goal - build a wind-powered machine that can lift weight off the ground. You’ll get a clear design challenge, a time limit, and a limited budget to work with. It’s fast-paced from the start.

Win Budget Through Problem Solving
Before you build anything, you’ll need to earn your budget. That means solving a series of logic and physical challenges against the clock. The better your team works together, the more currency you’ll earn for materials.

Buy Your Materials
You’ll use your winnings at the on-site supply station. Every team has the same options, so it comes down to your decision-making. Pick smart. Overspend and you’ll run short. Underspend and your design might not hold up.

Build and Test Your Design
Once you’ve got your parts, you start building. Some teams go straight in. Others sketch first. It doesn’t matter how you work, as long as your machine can catch wind and lift. You’ll test and adjust as you go - under pressure.

Compete for the Win
All machines go head-to-head in the final test. We measure lift, stability, and design approach. You’ll get a quick debrief too, looking at what worked and what didn’t. Great for team building if you want to highlight communication, planning, or decision-making under pressure.
Why Operation Windfall Works
Pressure shows how teams actually work - This isn’t a chatty away day. Once the timer starts, people fall into roles, planners, doers, problem-solvers. You see how teams work when the pressure’s on. That’s useful insight, especially if you're leading a team.
It balances thinking and doing - You won’t just be building for the sake of it. Teams need to think through a design, budget, and process, and then get hands-on. It gives everyone a way in, no matter their role or personality. That’s what makes it strong team building.
It makes decision-making visible - You can’t do everything. There’s a budget, a deadline, and gaps in information. That forces prioritisation and group decision-making. You see how your team handles compromise and input in a way day-to-day work doesn’t always allow.
It doesn’t rely on physical ability - This suits mixed teams. You don’t need to run around or be loud. The challenges reward good thinking, calm heads, and teamwork not fitness or extroversion. That means it lands well with cross-functional groups.
There’s a clear result - The final test gives a simple outcome: did it lift or not? There’s no vague scoring or overdone metaphor. It’s practical and focused. That helps teams reflect on how they worked together without needing a long debrief.
